Prof. Nadir Farid explains how PCOS is caused by a hormonal imbalance that sometimes prevents ovulation, making periods irregular and reducing fertility. He recommends lifestyle changes such as the low GI diet, long with 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times week for weight loss and regulating hormones. Foods with a high GI (such as baked potato and white bread) break down quickly during digestion, releasing glucose quickly into the bloodstream. This stimulates insulin production which in turn seems to upset hormone regulation.

Elana notes that the low GI plan does not leave out a single food group. "For every bread, there's a low GI bread, and for every sweet, a low GI option," she says.
