Case study: Rick Hardy, 58, from Aston Clinton, Herts
Before he discovered the Gl diet, office manager Rick Hardy was two and a half stone overweight and suffering from such severe fatigue that he had to take three months off work.
"We were at the end of our tether," says his wife, Colleen. "It was like someone had sucked the life out of him."
Rick had changed from being fit, healthy and lean throughout his life, to suffering from a number of seemingly unexplainable symptoms that baffled doctors. Eventually, he was referred by his GP to Professor Farid, an endrocrinologist, who diagnosed him with insulin resistance and referred him to Elana Hirschowitz, a dietician specialising in low Gl diets.
She introduced Rick to the low Gl way of eating, and he hasn't looked back since — dropping from 16 stone to 14 stone 7 and gaining back his energy.
"I feel so different now," he says. "I had got used to the way I was but it was still a shock to find myself in that state. Now I can go out and tackle physical tasks. I do a lot of walking and nature photography — the nine-mile walk used to be a struggle, but now I'm back to normal again"
